The Problem

Many people already use Venmo on a regular basis but for those making the same payments to the same people every week, month, or year, they don’t currently have an option to make that a recurring payment. Not including this feature forces users to have to create a new payment or charge for every interaction, meaning more steps and time is needed from users.

Create a recurring payment & request feature that enriches the Venmo user experience and does not disrupt what users already value and expect from the product.

The Solution

Research

Competitive Analysis

User Interviews

Competitive Analysis

In order to create this new feature for Venmo, I wanted to see what the competition was offering and use that to infer my designs and create something even more effective.

User Interviews

In order to better understand the user experience with Venmo I conducted three, 45 minutes long, interviews with participants aged 29-63. The questions focused on understanding users current likes and dislikes of the app and what added features would help enrich their experience or solve current pain points.

Affinity Mapping

User Personas

Affinity Mapping

After concluding the three user interviews, I used affinity mapping to visualize reoccurring themes that existed between all the participants.

  • All interview participants described Venmo being “streamlined” and easy to use in comparison to other money transfer apps.

  • Participants mentioned wanting to see a recurring payment option and described that enhancing their experience using the app.

User Personas

After synthesizing information collected from the user interviews and creating my affinity map, I was able to use those findings to create User Personas to help guide the direction of my design.

So What’s The Problem?

Users are tired of having to create individual transactions for every Venmo request & payment and additionally are losing track of whether or not they’ve sent/received transactions that they make multiple times.

Wireframes

Site Mapping, User & Task Flows

In order to add this feature into Venmo’s existing architecture it was important to map out users usual flow and incorporate the new feature’s steps without disrupting current user’s expectations or process.

Mid Fidelity Wireframes

Once the foundation was built, it was time to translate these plans to wireframes to better visualize how users would move through these flows, while keeping in mind the description users used the most about using Venmo: streamlined.

High Fidelity Wireframes

After deciding how to best assimilate my designs to Venmo’s existing UI and making adjustments to create a further streamlined process, I created high fidelity wireframes to demonstrate what this new feature would actually look like.

Usability Testing

Prototypes & Usability Testing

After completing all the key high fidelity screens for the process of setting up a recurring payment/request, I had 3 participants complete the following flow in order to observe any potential pain points.

  • Set a recurring payment request to Frodo Baggins for $50

    • Start the requests on December 11th.

    • Set the frequency to the first of the month.

    • Never end the request.

Final Designs

After receiving feedback from the test subjects, I made some final adjustments to the design to better suit the users needs.

Next Steps

If given the opportunity to fully develop this feature for Venmo, there are certain additions I think would continue to enhance the users experience.

  • When users go to their own profile, they will be able to see existing recurring payments or requests they have set up.

  • Adding an option to split the payments/requests with another user.
